Switchcars does not offer rent-to-own cars. We’re here to help you understand your options and explore smarter alternatives.
Rent-to-own (also called lease-to-own) is a type of vehicle finance where you make regular payments over a set period — typically 2 to 5 years — with the goal of owning the car at the end of the contract.
It’s often marketed to people who have difficulty accessing traditional car finance due to credit history, limited savings for a deposit, or other financial circumstances.
While it can seem like an accessible way to get into a car, it’s important to understand the full picture — including the total cost, your responsibilities, and how it compares to other options available to you.
If you’re searching for rent-to-own cars, you’re probably dealing with one of these situations:
Traditional finance has turned you down, and you need a car for work or family.
You don’t have thousands saved for a deposit that traditional loans require.
You need reliable transport quickly and can’t wait months to save up.
The idea of eventually owning the car feels like a path forward.
A balanced look at what rent-to-own offers — and what to watch out for:
Path to Ownership
You may eventually own the vehicle at the end of the contract.
Available with Poor Credit
Providers may accept applicants who’ve been declined by traditional lenders.
No Large Upfront Deposit
Typically requires smaller upfront costs compared to buying outright.
Higher Total Cost
Interest and fees can mean you pay 40-75% more than the car’s value.
Long Lock-in Contracts
You’re typically locked in for 2-5 years with limited exit options.
Maintenance Is Your Responsibility
Servicing, repairs, and registration costs are usually on top of payments.
Insurance Not Included
You must arrange and pay for your own comprehensive insurance.
Often Older Vehicles
Many rent-to-own providers offer higher-mileage, older stock.
Risk of Losing Payments
If you can’t keep up payments, you may lose the car and all money paid.
Excitement: Finally approved for a car!
Concern: The payments feel higher than expected
Frustration: Unexpected repair bills start coming
Regret: Realising the true cost of the deal
Example: A $20,000 car on rent-to-own
Plus you’re responsible for all maintenance, insurance, and registration on top of this.

New to car subscriptions? Ask us anything. Our local Switchcars team will explain how it works and help you decide if it’s right for you.
Flexibility: Unlike the traditional car-buying, leasing or long term car rental, a subscription service offers the flexibility to choose the duration, make, and model of the car. Our car subscription service is there to fulfil your specific requirements.
Convenience: From insurance to servicing, we take care of all your car-related hassles, so you can focus on enjoying the drive.
Affordability: Without big upfront costs or hidden fees, a car subscription service offers a more affordable and predictable way to have a car at your disposal.
Only nominated drivers can drive your SwitchCar. If you’d like to add more drivers to your subscription it’s just $10/week per driver as long as they meet the eligibility criteria. To be eligible for a SwitchCar, all drivers must: Hold a valid Australian (P2 or above) or equivalent international driver’s license that has not been cancelled or suspended in the past 3 years. | Be at least 21 years old and not over 75 years old. | Have at least 12 months of driving experience. | Not use any subscription vehicle for operating a rideshare service. | Not have had any criminal, drink or drug driving convictions in the last 5 years. | Not have made two or more motor insurance claims in the last 3 years. Additional individual criteria may apply.
Your subscription includes comprehensive insurance, covering damage to your vehicle and third-party property. In the event of an accident, a $2,000 excess is required immediately. If you’re not at fault, and the third party’s insurer accepts liability, we’ll return the full $2,000 once the claim is approved.
If the damage is under the excess, we’ll obtain a formal repair quote and deduct only the repair cost from your $2,000—returning the remaining balance to you. No matter the situation, our team will guide you through the process and help get you back on the road quickly. More details on insurance here.
